American Memorial is project under development that combines photography, road trips, film, and writing to present American histories through a landscape lens. The goal of the project is to bring American communities closer to one another by entering difficult stories through their landscapes, at eye level and in situ to establish common ground.

Envisioned as a television series in order to reach wide audiences, American Memorial emphasizes “show” over “tell” by offering viewers an opportunity to see for themselves places they might not otherwise ever visit or know.

Part I centers on Japanese American landscapes of the Exclusion Act, internment, and resiliency. Other chapters include the Mississippi River crossing on the Trail of Tears, the Los Angeles’ Chinese Massacre and its new memorial, the Porvenir Massacre and Refusing to Forget project, and the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire of New York.
